How To Do Facial at Home: 6 Simple and Easy Steps
More than ever in these special times, you need to cut yourself off from that scary world. With this step-by-step plan, you give yourself an (almost) professional facial at your home. Smartphone off, me-time on!
Now that your skin may have seen a lot of sun in recent weeks, it’s a good idea to ‘pamper’ her extra with an extensive and restorative facial at your home. Granted, you probably don’t have a heated massage chair at home, and there may not be a jug of cucumber water in the fridge as standard. But you can give yourself a wonderful facial, which is as relaxing as with the beautician. Tip: a date night soon? Then give each other this facial!
Preparation
Nothing more annoying than suddenly hearing “Honey, have you paid that internet bill yet?” or “Mamaaaa, where’s my book?” in the middle of a soothing facial. Therefore, tell your partner and mini me’s in advance that they should leave you alone for an hour and send them to the living room in lockdown. Also, put on some soothing music in the bathroom – on Spotify, for example, you’ll find a lot of soothing wellness playlists –, dim the lights and choose a delicious scented candle, house perfume or fragrance sticks to get into relax mode.
1. Blowing off steam
The first step in a facial is always to cleanse your face thoroughly. To really cleanse your skin in-depth, you can first give yourself a steam treatment. Fill your sink or bowl with hot water and add a few drops of facial oil if necessary. DHC Deep Cleansing Oil is ideal for dry skin, while oilier skin better opts for Clarins’ Lotus Face Treatment Oil Oily or Combination Skin.
Then go with your face above the sink or hang out a few inches from the water and put a towel over your head to create a ‘tent’ that keeps the heat inside. Hang around for 5 to 10 minutes to open your pores. Use that time to watch your breathing and really unwind. The perfect starting shot of a delicious facial!
2. Double cleaning
Now that your pores are free, it’s time to clean them. Try double cleansing, where you clean your skin on two levels. First, clean all makeup, dirt and sebum from your face with mild cleansing oil or balm such as Le Baume Démaquillant et Nettoyant aux Trois huiles from Sisley. The second step is a water-based cleaning product that lets you say goodbye to all scraps of makeup, dirt and dead skin cells—budget-friendly choice: Micellar Cleansing Water from ICI PARIS XL.
Pro tip: do you want that real beauty salon experience? Then soak a small towel in warm water to remove the cleaning products (and later your mask) from your face.
3. Scrub time
Even a double cleanse doesn’t take everything off your face. To remove dead skin cells, you need a facial scrub with small particles that exfoliate your skin. Gentle Exfoliating Face Scrub by Nature by ICI PARIS XL gives your skin a delightful peel. The 100% vegan scrub contains pomegranate seeds that make your skin look fresh and radiant again.

4. Masquerade
Time for the most important step: your mask! You choose that based on your skin type. You can also combine different masks if, for example, your skin is fat on your T-zone and dry on your cheeks. Have you been in the sun much? Then give your skin a restorative mask such as the Soothing Gel Mask Green Tea & Aloe Vera from Only You. Avoid your eye contours when applying: they need special treatment with, for example, estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery Eye Mask. Your mask(s) should be put in for about 10 to 15 minutes: ideal for meditating or enjoying a mini power nap in bed!
Pro tip: extend your facial treatment with a mani-pedi and give your hands and feet a nourishing mask thanks to the Soft & Smooth Hand Mask and the Soft & Smooth Foot Mask from Qiriness. Pay attention: These hand and foot masks should be retracted longer than your face mask, 20 to 30 minutes, so rinse your face mask before starting your mani-pedi masks!
5. DIY massage
Boost your skin with a serum that tackles specific skin problems: dry skin, the first wrinkles, pigment spots, coarse pores … Our tip for skin that has been in the sun a lot: Vitamin C Booster Serum from Novexpert, which makes your skin shine again and also stimulates collagen production for a rejuvenation effect.
6. Moisturize
The final step: hydrate your face. If you do this facial throughout the day, give your skin a layer of day cream. Looking for a new favourite? Try Helena Rubinstein’s plant-based Powercell Skinmunity Day Cream that protects against pollution and makes your skin firmer. If it’s evening, you’d better choose a night cream like Kenzoki’s deliciously creamy Lotus Blanc Cosmic Night Cream with 100% naturally calming vegetable water from white lotus for relaxed and radiant skin.
Pro tip: apply your moisturiser using facial yoga, which helps tighten your skin and prevent wrinkles. Do you have a thick or oily moisturiser? Then it is best to do your face yoga exercises before applying them. Otherwise, your fingers will not get enough grip on your skin.
